The 1996 Atlanta Olympics promised to bring the world together in a celebration of athletic prowess and unity. However, on July 27th, the festive atmosphere was shattered by a bombing that claimed the life of Alice Hawthorne, a mother who traveled three hours from her home to give her daughter the gift of watching the Olympic Games. The perpetrator, Eric Rudolph, later claimed responsibility and pleaded guilty in court, but the damage had already been done.
As someone who was present at Centennial Park on the night of Alice's death, the fear and confusion that consumed the panicked crowd will forever be etched in my memory. As rumors of additional bombings spread throughout the city, I ran for safety alongside others. In the aftermath of the tragedy, I made a vow to honor Alice's memory and to never forget the innocent life that was lost that night.
Eric Rudolph believed that his actions were justified due to the occurrence of abortions in our country, but his violent acts of protest were unjustified and went against the principles of human rights and dignity. His actions affected real people, including Alice and her loved ones, and threatened the stability of a peaceful, just and equitable society.
The use of violence as a means to achieve social justice is a disturbing trend in our society and those who engage in such acts must face consequences, including imprisonment. Eric Rudolph's crimes warrant the harshest punishment possible, as a reminder that such actions have real and devastating consequences.
Alice's memory must not be forgotten. Her death serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violence, both physical and emotional, on innocent people and their loved ones. I hope that by sharing my story and paying tribute to Alice, readers will take the time to learn more about her and remember the precious life that was lost that fateful night in Atlanta.
