As the hopes for freedom raise in Iraq, the complete story of Zarqawi's demise has yet been told to us. Here's something that I found at Live Science.com:
Zarqawi: Hit via Satellite
Satellite technology was used to take out terrorist leader Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, head of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Late Friday, Air Force Space Command let it be known that “space combat effects” provided the upper-hand in Zarqawi’s death.
A Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite-aided GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition was one of the two munitions used in the bombing of Zarqawi’s last safe house.
“Once again, GPS-aided munitions played a significant role in the success of an important operation,” said Brig. Gen. Donald Alston, Director of Air and Space Operations, Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
“When you’re after an elusive, high-value target, you’ve got to make every shot count,” Alston noted. “GPS provides the precision timing and navigation absolutely instrumental in both protecting our troops on the ground and taking out the bad guys.”
